32-bit vs. 64-bit Linux

Postby billb on Mon Oct 19, 2009 2:39 pm

I have an AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4200+ and I'm currently checking out Ubuntu 9.04 64-bit, but as expected I'm running into a few hiccups here and there with 64-bit. For example, I had a 64-bit Flash plugin (pre-release) from Adobe running fine, but it appears it has since been replaced with a 32-bit version from the repos. Grrr. Thinking about going back to 32-bit already...

On this computer I'll probably play around with emulators a little, but mostly it's used for web, email, office apps, a UPnP DLNA server for the PS3(s), etc.

Congrats to that machine!

Stay with 64-bits ;)! If Ubuntu really has some troubles with that, try openSUSE (incl. 32-bit compatibility libraries) or Fedora.

Seriously, it may have been caused by a wrong dependency... and _should_ work cleanly!

On x86_64, emulation in 64-bit is definitely faster than in 32-bit.

OK that's fixed now ... something (or someone :P) had installed the flashplugin-nonfree package. Removed that, restarted Firefox, and have my pre-release 64-bit Flash back.

Good  !

The good thing is that Ubuntu 9.04 is fully supported by QMC2:

Quite important :D !

Oh, and note that there are troubles with SDL's ALSA driver and PulseAudio, which Ubuntu 9.04 uses. This causes crackling sound for SDLMAME and SDLMESS (and probably other SDL applications as well). Enabling "-ad esd" or "-ad pulse" should fix it, though.
