Can you elaborate a bit on this step?
Sure, I installed PdaXrom (which I have as my normal bootloader for linux - it lets you use the sixaxis to select whether to boot GameOS or YDL):
Download bootloader 'pdaXrom-ng-otheros.bld', rename it to 'otheros.bld'.
On your USB stick or CD create the directory /PS3/otheros/ and copy 'otheros.bld' file to it.
Insert CD or a plug USB stick into PS3 and go to System->System Settings->Install Other OS. PS3 should find and install bootloader.
Go to System->System Settings->Set Default OS->OtherOS to boot up with pdaXrom-ng bootloader.

After booting, I hit escape to go to the linux shell, logged in as root and restored the YDL partitions/data (using fdisk -l to locate the backup hard drive, and dd to restore the image from the backup hard drive to /dev/ps3da).
BTW you can install pdaXrom to an existing linux system, I started out with the normal YDL 6.1 install, then added the bootloader a few weeks later Just did the Install Other OS a second time from the GameOS.
